BAVARIA - REISEN
How did the Bavaria 42, built in 2000,
prove itself on the journey?
"The ship proved itself very well, we always
felt safe even in bad weather. On our
Bavaria, there was a sail storage room
between the bow cabin and the anchor
locker, which was very useful, because that
way we could take a complete second set
of sails with us".
And what was changed on the ship before
departure?
"We insulated all areas accessible from
the inside with Armaflex. Then we installed
a watermaker, a Watt and Sea 600 POD
hydrogen generator, a second alternator
and new 480 Ah batteries, plus about 1100
Watt solar panels on the sprayhood, on the
bimini and above the davits. For warmth
below deck we installed a Planar hot air
heating system with outlets in all cabins,
as well as a water/air heat exchanger
44
which is directly integrated into the engine
cooling circuit. This enabled us to heat the
saloon every time we were motoring and
we did not have to run the air heater in
parallel”.
Niklas Marc Heinecke brought back a
total of 16,000 pictures from this trip.
"107 of them made it into the book. Each
one was looked at, discussed and had
to be justified with eight eyes. There are
pictures that are beautiful, but they did
not fit into the concept or did not meet our
requirements".
That sounds like a lot of work. Was it
worth it?
"Absolutely! To hold the book in your
hand at the end is of course something
very special and satisfying. Especially
nowadays, when my pictures are mainly
published digitally, every print product is
a celebration in itself. And on top of that,
Cold Waters is my first illustrated book of
this size".
The large-format and bilingual (German/
English) book can only be warmly recommended,
even though the waters may have
been cold for the most part. But the book
will certainly not leave readers cold. You
