Let me state here that I was okay, based
on the initial testing, with avoiding milk
and cheese along with acidic foods like
tomatoes and citrus fruits – things I enjoy
but can live without nicely.

When, however, she used two fingers
effortlessly to collapse my arm while
holding essence of cashew against my
lower stomach, I had a very different
reaction. This couldn’t be! Cashews
are my favorite! I insisted she try again,
and again, as I locked my elbow and
shoulder. Sigh…goodbye cashews.
She repeated this procedure with a wide
range of nuts, fruits, vegetables, meats,
grains, dairy and snack foods. What
became obvious was that my body does
not process dairy, sugar or ferments
efficiently. In particular, the testing
showed I needed to avoid all milk
products, refined sugar, alcohol, vinegar,
wheat, yeast, and items
containing natural mold
such as peanuts and

The diet required that I supplement my
food intake with some pretty offbeat (to
me) pills and potions from the health
food store, ranging from passion flower
and folic acid to chlorophyll and flax
After three months of repeated testing,
and dipping a pH strip into a cup of my
own urine daily, I was cleared to eat raw
produce items. Later, I was able to stop
taking most of the supplements.
I still abstain from sugar, wheat, yeast,
dairy and specific foods like cashews
(darn) and corn (too much natural sugar).

triathlons and I feel great. Plus, the older
I get, the less competition I have to win

I did in 2005. Okay, so they’re just a
teensy bit stained and out of date and
have a few moth holes…but they fit!
Look, I’m not special. You, too, can get
back to a healthy weight and fitness
level by listening to your body and seek-ing
professional help to balance your nu-tritional
and exercise needs. We all can
benefit from an honest appraisal of how
and what we are feeding our bodies.
Nutritionists, dieticians, eating disorder
specialists and self-help support groups
all are great resources.
Learning how to play my cards right has
taught me I don’t have to suffer with
eating problems. And neither do you.
