Chapter 22 Employment in the film industry The UK film industry employs significant numbers of skilled people but is a volatile employment sector. In 2013, employment was high with more than 66,000 people working across the industry’s three main sectors. FACTS IN FOCUS: In 2013, over 66,000 people worked in the UK film industry, of whom 42,000 worked in film and video production. Employment in film and video production was concentrated in London and the South East. Just under half (45%) of people working in film and video production were freelance. Women made up just 14% of both screenwriters and directors of UK films released in the UK in 2013 (in 2012, 13% of screenwriters and 8% of directors of UK films released were women). Most film industry businesses had low numbers of employees, in particular those involved in film and video production, where 95% of workplaces employed 10 people or fewer.
