At UC Tromsø, delegates witness the launch of several new products developed to support training for a more sustainable and safe maritime industry
Kongsberg Digital’s annual Simulation User Conferences (UC) took place this year in Tromsø,
Norway and in St. John’s, Canada. The theme for the conferences was how simulation & train-ing
can be used to support a more sustainable and safe maritime industry. Several major training
institutes presented user cases on the topic and in addition, the delegates could witness several
product launches on new K-Sim solutions developed with sustainability and safety firmly in focus.
SAFETY & SUSTAINABILITY FOCUS
The number of maritime accidents and
incidents continues to be too high. This
raises the bar for development of a
stronger safety culture, backed by new
standards and regulations for proce-dures
as well as proper education and
re-training of crew.
This year’s user conferences, which were
arranged in Tromsø (Norway) in Septem-ber
and in St. John’s (Canada) in Novem-ber,
gathered more than 200 delegates in
total from leading maritime oragnizations
worldwide. The conferences focused on
how simulation can be utilized to build
a strong safety culture with ingrained
awareness, while supporting more sus-tainable
maritime operations that meet
new standards and regulations.
SEVERAL NEW PRODUCT LAUNCHES
Kongsberg Digital launched several new
products at the UCs, including K-Sim
Fishery, which is a complete fishing ves-sel
bridge simulator fully equipped with
navigation and manoeuvring equipment
in addition to sonar, an echo sounder
and a catch monitoring system. The
training solution is developed for safer
and more sustainable fishery and com-plies
with the STCW-F training stand-ards
for fishing vessel personnel, which
came into force in 2012.
Also launched was the new K-Sim Fast
Craft simulator, which is designed for
highly realistic and immersive training in
high-speed navigation, boat handling and
tactical operations. It meets the demand-ing
training needs associated with high-speed
boat operation, allows for effective
and repeatable training and reduces risk to
personnel safety and equipment damage.
Last, but not least, Kongsberg Digital
also launched its new K-Sim Safety con-cept,
which generated a lot of interest
among the conference delegtes. K-Sim
Safety is a simulation system, specifi-cally

made to practise management and
execution of procedures for firefighting
as well as search and rescue operations
on board a vessel. With an immersive
3D virtual environment, the system pro-vides
a realistic, safe and cost-effective
enhancement of live practical training
for safety professionals.
PRODUCT NEWS & UPDATES
The conference program also featured
K-Sim product news and updates. Both
in the plenary sessions and in several
parallel sessions, delegates could dive
into topics of particular interest. K-Sim
Engine Product Managers presented the
growing library of engine room and cargo
handling simulator models, highlighting
the new DEDF LNG cruise ferry model
for LNG bunkering (meeting the require-ments
of the IGF code), high- voltage
training solutions and the new 3D virtual
engine room application for the MAN
ME model, all of which delegates could
explore and try during the breaks.
