As we bring 2013-2014 to a close, we reflect on the year that’s ending and make plans for 2014-15. Each academic year ends with Commencement on the Quadrangle. The May ceremony was special in a number of ways. It was the largest such ceremony in the history of USC Upstate as more than 870 students graduated and leave to use capacities they developed here for further study, productive work and meaningful living. More than 8,000 people were in attendance. During that time, honorary doctoral degrees were presented to three outstanding citizens of the Upstate: Delores F. “Dodie” Anderson ’81; Vollie C. “Vic” Bailey, Jr. and Julian C. Josey, Jr., M.D. Mrs. Anderson came to USC Upstate to complete her degree after helping run a family business and raising a family. A tremendous supporter of Spartan athletics as well as a rabid Gamecock fan and supporter, she has received numerous awards from the Spartanburg County Commission for Higher Education and the University, including the Dr. G.B. Hodge Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Bailey has nearly 60 years of experience in the automotive industry and is the chairman of an automotive company that consists of six new car franchises in Spartanburg. He has served his industry and community in multiple ways and was instrumental in the founding and development of USC Upstate. Dr. Josey is a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer for more than 40 years at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. His passion and commitment have led to the development of a nationally recognized and award-winning cancer treatment program through the Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute. He has served on the advisory board for the Mary Black School of Nursing. Two very distinguished guests visited our campus this spring. Dr. Daniel L. Dreisbach '81, a professor at American University and a Rhodes Scholar, was with us in February and delivered a public lecture and spoke at our Founders’ Day celebration. Pulitzer Prize winner Jon Meacham visited in March as the inaugural lecturer in the Dr. John B. Edmunds, Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series. His topic was “The Art of Leadership: Lessons from the American Presidency.” Our softball team ended its most successful season in University history with a 46-9 record, claimed its third A-Sun championship and earned its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament at the Tuscaloosa Regional. The men’s basketball team made school history with its first win ever over an SEC team and in defeating an ACC team in the same season. The team competed in the A-Sun semifinals and hosted a first round game in the CollegeInsider Tournament. We look forward to a 2014-15 filled with energy and vitality that make this region better for all who live here. Thanks for all you do to support our University. Go Spartans! Sincerely, Dr. Thomas F. Moore Chancellor For her lifelong support of community causes, an unwavering allegiance to Spartan athletics and service to USC Upstate, Delores F. “Dodie” Anderson was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. For his successful entrepreneurial endeavors and professional accomplishments and his unwavering dedication to his community and his advocacy efforts to establish and sustain USC Upstate, Vollie C. "Vic" Bailey, Jr. was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Public Service. Julian C. Josey, Jr., M.D. received the honoary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters during the May commencement for his distinguished career in radiation oncology, his passion and commitment to cancer treatment and his dedication to higher learning. The 2013-2014 season was the USC Upstate softball team's most successful season in school history. 3  2014 Spring Upstate Magazine
