Edmunds,DR. JOHN B. Jr DISTINGUISHED LECTURE SERIES UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPSTATE The University of South Carolina Upstate welcomed Pulitzer Prize winner Jon Meacham to campus in March as the inaugural speaker for the Dr. John B. Edmunds, Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series. Dedicated to bringing significant scholars in history, political science, philosophy and religion to the USC Upstate and the Upstate community, this series is named for Dr. John B. Edmunds, Jr., the founding faculty member of USC Upstate’s History Department, the first faculty member to be hired by the university when it opened and first dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Edmunds served for 43 years as a professor of American history at USC Upstate, a career distinguished by excellence as a teacher, a scholar and an administrator. A Spartanburg native, he earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of South Carolina. He is known for his encyclopedic knowledge of South Carolina history, his deep affection for his native state and his ability to convey his love for South Carolina to his students. NEW LECTURE SERIES KICKS OFF WITH NOTED HISTORIAN BY MEG HUNT Thus, it was fitting that the first speaker in this series be an accomplished historian such as Meacham. A New York Times best-selling author, Meacham received the Pulitzer Prize for his 2008 biography of Andrew Jackson, “American Lion.” He also is the author of “Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power,” “Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship,” and “American Gospel.” While at USC Upstate, he spoke on “The Art of Leadership: Lessons from the American Presidency.” “The Edmunds Lecture Series is committed to exposing the university and the community to scholars of national and international importance in the fields of history, political science, philosophy, and religion” said Dr. Rob McCormick, chair of the History, Political Science, Philosophy and American Studies Department. During his four decades of teaching, Edmunds helped to build the department upon a solid foundation of academic scholarship. “It is fitting that we honor the first professor of this great university,” said Chris Crowley '11, who with his wife, Garrow, provided a significant gift to establish the series. “John embodies the spirit of USC Upstate and his legacy has already enriched the lives of thousands of citizens.” The Dr. John B. Edmunds, Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series, sponsored by the Department of History, Political Science, Philosophy and American Studies at USC Upstate, will feature an address by a distinguished scholar each spring.
