FACULTY News We see them every day…behind the lectern, at the front of the classroom, demonstrating proper technique in the laboratory, bringing literature to life through discussion, and teaching students the value of pursuing dreams. Yes, faculty members at the University of South Carolina Upstate are committed to teaching and ensuring that students appreciate the journey in the process. And as gifted as they are in the classroom, many faculty members have other interests, too; interests that help give them even greater perspective for encouraging their students to be all they can be; to recognize that life is more than a singular course of study. “Faculty Focus – Take Two” brings these other interests to life in a new video-only feature of Upstate Magazine. Through in-depth interviews and on-location video shoots, we can now share some remarkable stories of what faculty members do when they’re not teaching. These videos can be seen in the online version of the magazine. Each issue will showcase at least three videos and give you a unique glimpse of the professor you know only from class. We hope you enjoy the show and look forward to hearing from you with more leads for “Take Two.” WHAT'S PLAYING Facult y Focus Take Two SCOTT SENGER Head Strength & Conditioning Coach USC Upstate athletes are used to Scott Senger making the right call when it comes to designing and implementing a strength, conditioning and/or speed program for them. But there are others who hope he makes the right call…players, coaches and fans in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), AA Premier Professional League, and USA Amateur Hockey. Yes, when he’s not overseeing strength and conditioning programs at the university’s Athletics Performance Center, Senger is skating the ice in the stripes of a hockey official. Join us as we follow a day in his life as a hockey official, from pre-game warm ups and taking the ice, to dropping the puck and making calls in the fastpaced action of the game. 2014 Spring Upstate Magazine 12
