Claire McDonald was appointed
managing director of HDI Global,
UK and Ireland in March 2019.
HDI Global is a corporate insurer
focused on property, casualty,
engineering and motor fleet with
offices in London, Birmingham,
Manchester, Glasgow and Dublin.
Previously she was with the
Allianz group for over 31 years
in a range of roles, functions
and countries (predominantly in
London but also three years based in Paris) most latterly as global
head of operations and global practice leader, Allianz Multinational
for Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS, the international
insurance programme product).
Prior to moving into operations McDonald had a 20-year
underwriting career starting with being a trainee at Allianz UK in
Maidstone, moving to the London market in 1991 as a property
underwriter eventually becoming regional head of onshore energy for
AGCS for a number of years.
She is a passionate believer in the necessity and strength of
diversity, she was the first female manager for Allianz in the global
risks area in 1999. While with Allianz she formed the Allianz Women
in the City network and chaired the Allianz Sponsorship Forum.
McDonald is a Liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Insurers
and on the board of iWin as well as an ambassador for the Insurance
Supper Club. Her passion for working for a more gender-equal
world comes from her core values around fairness, meritocracy
and wastefulness—gender should never be a reason why someone is
overlooked—and the societal “norms” that mean that the playing field
is not even, and how to change them.
McDonald is an active mentor and supporter of young women and
talent in general.

ANNE MIDDLETON

Anne Middleton joined Catlin in
2011 into the capital modelling
team, and assumed the role of
global head of placement for
ceded reinsurance for the then
XL Catlin Group in December
2016 and subsequently for AXA
XL, the combined division of
specialty commercial insurance and
reinsurance in AXA.
Over her career, Middleton
has worked across various roles
grounded in economic value enhancement within P&C re/insurance;
in an advisory capacity as a senior consultant at PwC (prior to 2011)
working across risk/return management including looking extensively
at the impact of Solvency II, as well as working in some of the typical
actuarial activities of reserving, pricing and capital modelling; an
analyst within Catlin’s capital modelling team reporting key levers of
risk/return to the executive leadership; head of group planning for
Catlin applying these principles within financial planning processes
and more recently head of finance for the global energy, property and
construction division within XL Catlin (up to December 2016).
This has provided for significant experience in risk/return
optimisation, capital management strategy, and also hands-on
familiarity with assumed and ceded insurance and reinsurance
business.
Middleton is a qualified Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (FIA),
with a first-class mathematics degree from Oxford University. In her
current role, she leads the design, structure, placement and operational
execution of all of Convex’s treaty reinsurance programmes globally
as well as leading the design, implementation, maintenance and use
of the group and legal entities’ capital model.
