What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
The most high profile moment of my career to date was
chairing the legal panel at the Guernsey Insurance Linked
Securities conference, which in 2015 was held in London
at the British Museum. Certainly the most awe-inspiring
speaking venue I have encountered.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what
would it have been?
I am a massive movies fan and so would have loved to do
something in the entertainment industry; or perhaps been
Kate Storey is a partner within the corporate department of
Appleby in Guernsey. She qualified as an English solicitor in
2000 and as a Guernsey advocate in 2009. She joined Appleby
in November 2013 having worked in Guernsey at other law
firms from 2007. Prior to this, she worked as a commercial
solicitor at Cobbetts in Manchester (now DWF).
Storey has extensive experience of all areas of Guernsey
corporate and commercial work, including specialist expertise
in the establishment, listing and regulation of investment
funds and the licensing and regulation of fund managers,
financial services providers and insurance vehicles under
Guernsey’s financial regulatory laws.
Why did you choose to work in this industry?
Guernsey has a long established insurance industry and is the
leading captive domicile in Europe, so going into insurance
law was a natural extension of my Guernsey corporate law
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
In the insurance field, developing an innovative alternative risk
transfer structure for pension funds to transfer their longevity
risk to the reinsurance markets, using a Guernsey incorporated
cell company structure. Also, appearing as an insurance expert
in the Financial Times special report on Guernsey published in
December 2014 was a highlight, albeit I shared the page with
a picture of that monkey famous for taking a selfie as part of
a feature on intellectual property rights.
