Job title: Partner, insurance and dispute resolution
2015: Partner in insurance disputes team/commercial
litigation group, Matheson
2005: Joined Matheson
Why did you choose to work in this industry?
Matheson is one of the few Irish law firms to have a
dedicated insurance group, comprising the insurance disputes
and corporate regulatory teams. As a trainee I did seats
in both teams, as well as seats in other parts of the firm,
and discovered that I really enjoyed insurance law and in
particular the challenge of tackling complex coverage issues
and the strategic side of disputes.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
There have been a number of highlights but one of these has
been successfully acting for Aviva in a significant subrogation
claim against a dam operator to recover losses arising from
flooding in Cork City. The trial on liability alone ran for 104
days and it was one of the longest running trials before the
Commercial Court in Ireland.
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
It is not enough to be a good lawyer. The insurance industry
is changing at a rapid pace, as is the way we provide legal
services to the insurance industry and add value for our clients.
Innovation is absolutely critical and is both challenging and
exciting in equal measures.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what
would it have been?
I am very happy with the path I have chosen and get great
personal satisfaction from resolving complex insurance issues
and delivering results for clients. I often think that if I won
the lottery I wouldn’t change a thing. That said, if I had
chosen something completely different, I would have liked
to have been a writer.
“Innovation is absolutely critical
and is both challenging and exciting
in equal measures.”
