Job title: Head of the Commercial Litigation insurance
2016: Vice chair of International Bar Association
2006: Council member of Irish Chamber of Commerce
2007–2015: Head of Commercial Litigation Group,
2002: Head of Insurance Litigation Group, Matheson
1999: Partner, Commercial Litigation Group, Matheson
Why did you choose to work in this industry?
I was given the opportunity to work on a large complex
insurance coverage claim in the late 1990s. This required me
to learn a lot about insurance placement and regulation. I
really enjoyed it and spotted the fact that there were very few
specialist insurance lawyers in Ireland. I therefore decided it
would be a good idea to specialise in Insurance law
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
It is difficult to point to one case but I found the insurance
recovery action against the Hydro Electric Dams in Cork
to have been a case that was challenging legally and it has
benefited society due to the change in behaviour of the dam
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
Achieving equity partnership. It is a male-dominated industry
and you need to be extremely focused and determined to
make it to the top.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what
would it have been?
I would like to have worked in intelligence or for the UN.
