had the opportunity to participate on the transaction team
for the purchase of the Midland Companies, American
Modern Insurance Group. In addition, I led the budget and
risk management section of the integration team.
This experience prepared me for an even bigger role when
Munich Re purchased The HSB Group from AIG in 2008. I
jointly led the business case development team. The process
was intense, requiring more hours than I ever thought possible.
It was a transformational experience, sending my career in a
new direction. I have always reached for assignments and
opportunities outside my comfort zone and without question,
it has paid off.
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
One of the biggest challenges of my career was transitioning
from an underwriting/management role with 20 years of
experience into a newly created finance role. I felt I was
starting over in a new career, not just a new role. When I
assumed the role, I already had substantial industry experience
and had participated in two acquisitions, but when I accepted
a role in corporate finance reporting to the CFO, I really felt
that I was starting from square one.
At times it was challenging to keep pace with all I had to
learn and maintain peak performance. I spent the first two
years in the new role working long hours, sometimes leaving
little time for my family. It was unsettling, but at the same
time it was exhilarating to be learning so many new things

She also was an adjunct professor at LaSalle University in the
Graduate School of Business.
Why did you choose to work in this industry?
One of my college professors was a former risk manager for
a Fortune 500 company. He inspired me to pursue a career
in the insurance industry. In my junior year of college I
changed my major from accounting to finance with a risk
management minor and never looked back.
I was recruited out of college by The PMA Group into their
underwriting training programme. There are many career
pathways into the insurance industry and I have been fortunate
to have had the opportunity to explore many of them.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
During 2007/2008 Munich Re undertook two major
acquisitions, significantly transforming the company. I first
