the workplace that is very different from how most of us view it.
— Dr. Sheldon Seidel
In developing the 2018 Annual Session continuing education,
the Planning Committee aimed to provide some unusual content.
“Many speakers who have long histories with the AAO have
outstanding expertise and we wanted to preserve the elements
that they bring to Annual Session educational programs,” says
Dr. Sheldon Seidel, serving as 2018 Orthodontic Staff Program
co-chair along with Dr. Normand Boucher. “We also wanted,
however, to do some re-imagining of topics and how lectures are
The Annual Session lecture schedules list the Mega Trends
series in the Orthodontic Staff Program grid; however, Dr. Seidel
emphasizes that content in the series will be relevant for both
doctors and staff.
“Our opening Mega Trends lecturer on Saturday morning,
Jacqueline Huggins, PhD, will present, ‘Respectful Workplace
Conversations: Resolving the War of Words Between Doctor/Staff;
Staff/Staff; Doctor/Patient,’” says Dr. Seidel. “Dr. Huggins uses an
interactive format and will respond to texted questions during
the program, which is something many of our members have requested.”
An organizational effectiveness consultant and corporate training
program developer, Dr. Huggins teaches individuals and organizations
how to improve thought processes and implement
organizational procedures that lead to positive change. Her
three-hour program at Annual Session will include breakdown
into group discussions.
“Dr. Huggins will guide us through an exploration of a way to
approach the workplace that is very different from how most of
us view it,” says Dr. Seidel. “We think the program will have a
big impact, and that those who participate will feel differently
and interact differently with people after they return to work.”
Dr. Huggins’ lecture is ticketed due to a capacity limit of 500
participants. Tickets may be reserved at Annual Session registration.
Dr. Huggins will also provide an afternoon Mega Trends
lecture, “Bridging the Divide,” which will examine communication
between Baby Boomers and members of the Millennial generation.
Other lectures in the Mega Trends series will range from Dr.
David Musich and Kyrsten Musich speaking on, “Millennials
as Patients, Staff and Future Partners: Their Impact on the World of
Orthodontics,” to Dr. Harold Crossley addressing street drugs
and the orthodontic patient.
“Dr. Crossley is a general dentist with a doctoral degree in
pharmacology, who was a long-time, beloved professor at the
University of Maryland Dental School,” says Dr. Seidel. “He has
educated himself extensively in this important topic on which
all dentists and dental specialists need to be informed, and is
a very engaging speaker.”
The Mega Trends series will also include:
An endodontist, Dr. Joel Small, presenting “Line of Sight Leadership.”
“Dr. Small feels that a key distinction of orthodontists,
as compared with others offering orthodontic services,
is our ‘culture’,” says Dr. Seidel. “Patients identify with us
and the office atmosphere we create. His presentation will focus
on creating an inviting office culture through leadership.”
William Droms, DBA, speaking on, “Investment Management
in Turbulent Markets.” Dr. Droms is the co-founder and chief
Investment officer of Droms Strauss Wealth Management,
Inc. In addition, he is the John J. Powers, Jr. Professor of
Finance Emeritus in the McDonough School of Business at
Georgetown University, where he taught investment management
in the undergraduate and MBA programs for over 40 years.
Dr. William Proffit, Dr. Lysle Johnston and Dr. James Vaden,
speaking on, “Cows, Cars and Trains.” “This lecture will give us
a chance to see a humorous and personal side of each
of these orthodontic luminaries as they share stories about
their hobbies and side businesses – the other passions that
they have in addition to orthodontics,” says Dr. Seidel.
