Award in Orthodontic Research
Dr. Lysle Johnston
Professor Emeritus and former chair, Orthodontics
and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan,
Dr. Johnston had chaired the orthodontic departments
of Case Western Reserve University and Saint Louis
University before joining the Michigan faculty. He now
teaches part-time at all three schools.
For more than 40 years, Dr. Johnston has conducted
research on differential effects of orthodontic treatments,
mechanisms of facial growth, and the interaction
between growth and treatment. He has received
research support via grants from the National Institute
of Dental and Craniofacial Research and has served
on the editorial boards of several journals, including
the AJO-DO and the British Journal of Orthodontics.
In addition, Dr. Johnston was a member of the Oral
Biology and Medicine Study Section of the National
Institutes of Health; and was a director of the Edward
H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. He received the
Albert H. Ketcham award of the American Board of
Orthodontics, the 5th International Award of the Italian
Society, and the AAO Dewel Award for research published
in the AJO-DO.
Dr. Johnston graduated from the University of Michigan
School of Dentistry and from Michigan’s Horace H.
Rackham School of Graduate Studies (orthodontics).
He also studied anatomy at the Queen’s University of
Belfast and received a Ph.D. in anatomy from Case
Western Reserve University.
