Dr. Birte Melsen
From 1975-2012, Dr. Melsen was professor and chair of the
Department of Orthodontics at The School of Dentistry, Aarhus
University, Denmark, where she completed her dental and
orthodontic education and now holds the title professor emeritus.
She has also had a part-time practice in Lübeck, Germany, focusing
on treating adults.
Author of more than 400 published articles, Dr. Melsen’s research
has encompassed study of human autopsy material, bone biology,
biomechanics, interdisciplinary treatment, skeletal anchorage and
tissue engineering. In recent years her primary areas of research
have been skeletal anchorage, virtual imaging and adult treatment.
She served as co-editor of the World Journal of Orthodontics and
of the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, and was an editorial board
member of other peer-reviewed journals.
Since 1974, Dr. Melsen has lectured all over the world on growth
and development, biomechanics, asymmetries, interdisciplinary
treatments, skeletal anchorage and adult orthodontics. In 2013,
she organized a session on self-ligating brackets at the AAO Annual
Session in Philadelphia.
Dr. Melsen has been very active in fundraising for third world
children, especially in South America where she lectures to
generate money for underprivileged children.
In 2000, she received the Knighthood of Dannebrog 1st degree,
the highest award possible for University affiliated researchers in
Denmark. In 1995, Dr. Melsen received the Louise Ada Jarabak
Memorial International Orthodontic Teachers and Research Award
from the AAO Foundation.
