Q: How the DMCA affects PrepaYd Wireless? What does this mean for the wireless community? A: The non-renewal of the unlocking cell phone exemption hasn’t negatively affected our activations or our BYOSP Program. In fact, BYOSP is in full compliance with any regulations for unlocking handsets. We technically don’t unlock handsets and have an agreement with Sprint gaining carrier approval for each handset that is activated on BYOSP. There are limitations to BYOSP though, Bring Your Own Sprint Phone is for Sprint-branded handsets only. We do not have approval to activate iPhones, Blackberries or PTT Devices. ESN/MEIDs reported as lost, stolen, or as fraudulent are not approved in addition to ESN/ MEIDs that are currently active with an MDN within the Sprint Network (Sprint Retail, Boost, Virgin, PrepaYd, etc.). We do hope that regulation changes again soon. We are not successful if our distribution partners cannot maintain prof itability with their entire product lineup. The new restrictions on unlocking cell phones can make it harder for some dealers to keep the lights on. If regulation doesn’t change, we believe other MVNOs will be offering similar carrier approved BYOP programs. Q: We understand PrepaYd Wireless just migrated to epay. What does this mean for your dealer channels? A: We have strategically partnered with epay to manage the payments for our retail distribution in order to improve our rate structures, offer more innovative services, and to take PrepaYd Wireless to the next level. Through our partnership with epay, we’ve started offering dealer ACH spiffs in March, RTR payments in April, and will be offering PrepaYd Wireless Activations through epay Terminals by summer. It’s been exciting times for us to say the least. This is just the beginning. There are more innovative services coming down the pipeline this year! Another reason we’ve partnered with epay has been to increase out visibility with dealers and distribution channel partners allowing us to provide an unparalleled level of dealer support. Q: There is such a big play now across carriers to foster and build the prepaid business, how does PrepaYd Wireless create your own dealer niche? A: Being the new breed of the Sprint MVNO in itself is our niche! Dealers and master agents have been so concentrated on GSM and with other CDMA coverage products that, at times, we f ind ourselves making the business case for why they should start carrying a Sprint coverage product again. Sprint coverage products have carried a negative stigma with many master agents and dealers due to the former lack of BYOD restrictions and limitations on which handsets could be sold by dealers. For those that did sell them, odds are they only sold Boost or Virgin Mobile. When those carriers started changing their policies and compensation structures for multi-carrier dealers, it was the f inal straw for many. BYOSP and our dealer-friendly approach is where word of mouth has been our ally lately as Dealers are spreading the word about how PrepaYd represents a new breed of Sprint MVNOs giving them a reason to start selling a Sprint coverage products again!
