miniature tales by Garnie Johnson The Story Behind the Photo 44 Miniature Horse World JUNE/JULY 2013 Kraus Kings Twiggy Editor’s note: While researching some of the archive photos stored in the AMHA office, there appeared two photos of Kraus Kings Twiggy, who won both the Pleasure Driving and the Grand Champion Mare class at the Calgary Stampede in 1983. Curiosity peaked that a mare could be great at both driving and halter at such a large event. In reply to my email, I shared quite an entertaining phone call with Garnie Johnson, who is Portia Sue Johnson- Kalinka’s father. The young girl in the photo who also shares a 30 plus year history with the AMHA grew up showing some wonderful horses, and stayed committed to the Miniature industry and is now a Senior AMHA judge. When I asked to know a little more about the mare pictured, memories of “Twiggy” came flooding back and the following is taken from my letter about her from Garnie Johnson. Kraus Kings Twiggy at the 1983 Calgary Stampede. I suspect from our phone call that you may have detected that I do enjoy recalling all the good times my family and I had with Twiggy. Portia bought Twiggy from Mr. Emge in the fall of 1982. The photo taken at the Calgary Stampede would have been taken in July 1983, just 60 days before Twiggy surprised everyone with her one and only foal, Unintentionally Cocoa. Twiggy had shared a pasture with International Champion, Cocoa Butter before Portia bought her, but we had no idea she was in foal until after we returned from the show in Calgary.
