educator, Dr. Janssen’s community efforts are changing the life of thousands of people locally, statewide and nationally. He obtained a grant for a study on behalf of the Michigan State Police Office of Highway Patrol on alcohol intervention for trauma patients. He obtained a certification in counter narcotics and terrorism operational medical support for medical directors. Dr. Janssen served on the Disaster Medical Assistance Team in Michigan for four years, and, for the past 11 years, he has served as Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Officer. Last year, he was promoted to Pontiac Substation Sergeant. He also serves as Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Physician/Medical Director Special Response Team/SWAT. All of this work is as a volunteer. Most recently, Dr. Janssen has been heavily involved with the current opiate epidemic. In the emergency department, we see the toll opiate use is taking on our community, and Dr. Janssen not only cares for these patients with utmost respect and compassion, but he has chosen to do more than treat patients. He has been very active in the prevention of addiction and overdose. He has trained more than 300 Oakland County sheriffs and numerous other police and pre-hospital providers in the use of the antidote Narcan for suspected opiate overdoses. He testified before the Michigan Congress on changing laws that will allow police and first responders to give Narcan to opiod victims. Under his supervision, Oakland County was the first sheriff’s department in Michigan to carry and use Narcan. Within the first year of the law passing, more than 20 lives were saved, thanks to Dr. Janssen providing training on the use of the antidote and his crusade to allow police to administer this lifesaving medication – a drug reversal spray that counters suspected heroin overdoses and prescription-killing drugs within seconds, returning blacked-out or unresponsive users to consciousness. Oakland County was the first county in the state to begin using this spray…. It was through Dr. Janssen’s efforts that there is an increasing presence of doctors and medical personnel on the front lines of defense, serving side by side with law enforcement officials to provide medical care on the scene that often can be lifesaving. The bill was passed by the Michigan Legislature –Liability of certain persons for emergency care Act 17 – protecting physicians, physicians’ assistants and nurses rendering emergency care without compensation at the scene of an emergency. It is with utmost pride that I nominate Alan Janssen for the Grand Blanc Chamber’s Health Professional Hero award. He truly is a hero to patients, citizens, law enforcement officials and health care providers. Genesys Health System One Genesys Parkway, Grand Blanc MI 810.606.5952 DR.
