92 GENESYS HEALTH SYSTEM CHAIRMAN’S AWARD NOMINATION Innovative Health - Summer 2016 DR ALAN JANSSEN NOMINATED AS HEALTH PROFESSIONAL HERO Stuart Etengoff, DO, FACEP, Emergency Medicine Physician, Genesys Health System, recently nominated Dr Alan Janssen for the Health Professional Hero Award. Dr Janssen, assistant medical director, Genesys Emergency Services; and director, Genesys Emergency Medicine residency program, is a DO, FACOEP-D, FACEP, and FAAEM. Here are portions of the accomplishments of this local medical hero, from the written recommendation of Dr Etengoff: Reason for nominating Alan Janssen: I have known AJ personally and professionally for more than 20 years. He was one of my residents in emergency medicine at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital where he was then known as Dr. Doogie Howser because of his youthful appearance, which he still has 20 years later! Our relationship continued when we both joined the medical staff at Genesys. Dr. Janssen has served as Director of the Emergency Medicine residency program for almost 20 years. In this role, he has trained emergency medicine residents who now work all over the country – many as Emergency Medicine residency program directors or medical directors of hospital emergency departments. Genesys is one of the few emergency medicine residency programs in the country that is both DO and MD certified – thanks to the tireless efforts of Dr. Janssen to obtain dual certification. He is nationally known in the field of emergency medicine education – not just as an educator but also as a crusader for the community’s health. He is served as an Assistant Clinical Professor for the Department of Internal Medicine at Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine for almost 20 years; he serves as the Michigan State University Statewide Campus System Lead Program Director; and he has earned these fellowships: Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians, Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Physicians, Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians. He is a director and instructor for pediatric advanced life support, and a provider/ instructor/director for advanced cardiac life support. He has conducted extensive research and published his research on emergency medicine resident wellness and resident training that helped determine duty hours for emergency medicine residents to ensure patient safety, and the mental and physical health of residents. He also conducted research on increasing stroke treatment in the emergency department, served as a co-investigator on a clinical trial for patients with elevated myocardial infarction, and conducted a study on tactical emergency medical support physician involvement and injury patterns…. Specific examples of how Dr. Janssen has demonstrated the criteria of Health Professional Hero/community service: Outside his work as an outstanding emergency medicine physician, leader and
