There are 28,543 people interred in Great Lakes National Cemetery, with the space to house a projected 244,000. This includes space to accommodate casketed and in-ground burial of cremated remains. Cremated remains may also be placed in the above ground columbarium walls. These walls are beautiful, with names and dates engraved on the front markers. Flat markers in granite, marble, and bronze; and upright headstones in granite and marble, are also available. Bronze markers are also available to mark columbaria used for inurnment of cremated remains (www.cem.va.gov/ cems/nchp/greatlakes.asp).
