118 Innovative Health - Summer 2016 BELL’S BEARS WERE ONLY THE BEGINNINGTHE PASSION NORTHERN MICHIGAN SCULPTOR Sean Bell is the consummate artist. He is a talented sculptor who creates beautiful work using a variety of wood, stone, and ice. His artistic journey is based on a love of creating. Sean developed a passion for sculpture while beginning to pursue a career in special effects makeup during school. He then began to specialize in figurative sculpture, gaining experience on commissioned work and in various commercial studios. of a He began seriously working with wood about 15 years ago. He opened his store, “Signs and Sculpture by Sean Bell,” in Roscommon, Michigan, in the middle of the Lower Peninsula, close to Higgins Lake and Houghton Lake. Sean talks about the early days of his work with a chuckle: “At the beginning, everything looked hideous – at least to me. But everything sold for something. And I felt encouraged.” Sean now sees clients by appointment only. His customer base has expanded dramatically; he has a statue in Chicago, a commissioned work for the city’s White Sox major league baseball organization, and another on the grounds of the University of Wisconsin. He has also made numerous pieces for the Green Bay Packers. He is currently taking special orders with an approximate delivery date of 2018. He began with the bears, though, and they are so popular and distinctive that they are known as Bell’s Bears. “The bears have always been the favorite piece,” he says. And people wanted all different kinds of bears – brown bears, black bears, pandas, grizzlies – even baby bears – which are nowhere near “baby” size.” These sculptures can be found in many different venues – in natural settings such as parks, in commercial locations, and in cabins and homes throughout the state. Sean began woodworking more than 15 years ago and he branched into stone and cement five years later... “The wood can be forgiving,” he says, ruefully. “Stone is not so forgiving. A mistake made
