Yet another barrier for HIV-positive patients is a lack of local resources. Wellness Services, Inc. works to remedy that situation by going where their clients are, wherever that may be. Two years ago, WSI expanded their HIV Care Coordination program beyond Genesee County and into Tuscola, Saginaw, Livingston, Shiawassee, and Lapeer Counties. Prior to this expansion, some of those areas contained no services for HIV-positive treatment extremely difficult for anyone without the money and ability to travel long distances multiple times a week. Now WSI helps its clients navigate the complicated world of health insurance, linking them to appropriate medical care, providing support groups and behavioral health counseling, and connecting them with health-education and community resources. In spite of everything we have learned about HIV/AIDS over the last three decades, we still have a long way to go. According to a report released by the CDC in February, if current rates of HIV continue, 50 per cent of homosexual black men will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetime. Such a sobering statistic demonstrates why organizations like Wellness Services, Inc., are more crucial than ever. Through client services, health education, and outreach programs, WSI is working to prevent future HIV diagnoses, and to ensure that anyone who is diagnosed with HIV has every possible chance to live a rich, full, long life. HIV and AIDS may be difficult to talk about, but it is far more dangerous to avoid the topic altogether. Perhaps one day, with the help of non-profits like Wellness Services, Inc., the subject of HIV will no longer be taboo. 113 people at all, making adequate Wellness Services, Inc. 311 E.
