Both of her parents were killed and Jayla and her brother suffered catastrophic injuries. Jayla is a quadriplegic patient now, and breathes with the help of a ventilator. She and her siblings live with their grandparents, assisted by of Amira Medical Staffing, a private duty nursing and attendance care services organization specializing in spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries.  When news broke that President Barack Obama was coming to visit the City of Flint on May 4th, Jayla was overjoyed. Her latest letter to him complimented his family and included pictures of herself, both before and after her 104 a bright, happy twelve-year old girl with a passion to meet President Barack Obama.
