6 | KNOW • Volume 12 Issue 2 Why does GAE Recommend Valarie Wilson for our next State Superintendent? Valarie received the recommendation of our GAE-Fund for Public Education PAC because it felt that she has the critical in-depth knowledge of how public education in Georgia currently works and that her experience, credentials and commitment will be a great asset as state superintendent. Valarie possesses a vision and expertise that will be student-focused on a daily basis as it relates locally, statewide and nationally. Valarie understands the challenges the next state school superintendent faces in leading the state’s efforts to educate over 1.6 million children. Valarie’s drive and vision for helping to make Georgia a positive example of what public education should look like makes her stand out from the crowd. Valarie’s vision is to lead a public education system that provides all children with a high quality and equitable public education that incorporates rigor and relevance; one that prepares our children to be academically strong and productive citizens who enjoy successful lives. She believes our schools should help to create a rewarding experience for a new generation of learners who are prepared to be globally competitive with their peers across the country and abroad. The GAE-FPE PAC invited all state superintendent candidates in for interviews. Seven accepted and were interviewed. Valarie Wilson served on the school board of the City Schools of Decatur from 2002 to 2013 and was board chair from 2005-2011. She joined the Georgia School Boards Association in 2009 and was its presidents in 2012-13. Vote July 22
