www.gae.org | 27 The proposed amendment set forth below was initiated by a petition signed by at least 50 certified delegates to the Representative Assembly pursuant to authority under Article IX, Section 1 (b) of the GAE Constitution. Bylaw 2. MEMBERSHIP 2-1 Categories d. Retired Members. Retired educators who have been active members of the Georgia Association of Educators shall become annual Retired members of the Association upon payment of the annual Retired membership dues. Retired school employees shall become GAE-Retired (life) members of the Association upon payment of the one-time “life” membership fee. GAE-Retired membership is limited to persons who maintain membership in the NEA-RETIRED program. d. Retired Members. 1. Any person who qualifies in any of the following categories may become a member of the Georgia Association of Educators Retired. GAE-RETIRED membership is limited to persons who maintain membership in the NEA-Retired program. • Membership is open to any retired educator or educational support professional who has been an active member of the Georgia Association of Educators. • Membership is open to any retired educator or educational support professional who has been an active member in an affiliate of the National Education Association in another state. • Membership is open to any person who has retired as a staff member of the Georgia Association of Educators, the National Education Association, or any other affiliate of the National Education Association. 2. Any person eligible for membership, as listed above, shall become members upon payment of dues in one of the following ways: • GAE/NEA Retired annual membership shall be obtained upon payment of the annual Retired membership dues. • GAE/NEA Retired (life) membership shall be obtained upon payment of the one-time “life” membership fee. Rationale: This amendment simply adds clarification as to who may become a member of the Georgia Association of Educators Retired. Retired educators who have been active members of the Georgia Association of Educators shall become annual Retired members of the Association upon payment of the annual Retired membership dues. Retired school employees shall become GAE-Retired (life) members of the Association upon payment of the one-time “life” membership fee. (A) Retired membership shall be open to any person who qualifies in any of the following ways: (1) As a retired educator or educational support professional who has been an Active member of the Georgia Association of Educators; (2) As a retired educator or educational support professional who has been an Active member in an affiliate of the National Education Association in another state; (3) As a person who has retired as a staff member of the Georgia Association of Educators, the National Education Association, or any other affiliate of the National Education Association and who qualifies for NEA-Retired membership; or, (4) As a person who was employed for at least five (5) years in a position that would have qualified him/her for Active membership in an NEA affiliate but who is no longer so employed or is retired. (B) Any person eligible for membership as provided in subparagraph (A), shall become members in the Retired category upon payment of dues in one of the following ways: (1) GAE/NEA Retired annual membership shall be obtained upon payment of the annual Retired membership dues; or, (2) GAE/NEA Retired (life) membership shall be obtained upon payment of the one-time “life” membership fee. Rationale: This amendment expands and adds clarification as to who may become a member of the Georgia Association of Educators Retired membership category. Also, it brings GAE into closer agreement with the NEA Retired membership category.
