Wilson served as board chairman of the Decatur City Schools Board, where she was responsible for turning around the school district’s finances. As a result, she was able to move the district forward with no teacher furloughs. Valarie also served as president of the Georgia School Boards Association. Her vision for public education is building a strong system that provides all children with an equitable and quality public education that incorporates rigor and relevance. In Valerie’s words, “I am laser-focused on doing what is best for students.” Valarie will also advocate on behalf of all school employees—working for full funding of the Quality Basic Education Act (QBE), ensuring that all education funding is restricted to public schools and programs, and promoting the imple-mentation of a fair evaluation procedure. She wants to see improved salaries, protection of retirement and health insurance benefits. Valarie Wilson understands the role of the State School Superintendent and will work collaboratively with the Governor’s office, legislature, state agencies, education groups and others to build a Class One K-12 public education system in Georgia. 16 | KNOW • Volume 12 Issue 3 GREG HECHT GAE Endorsed Candidate for Attorney General Greg Hecht served in the State Senate and House for a combined total of six years. He currently works as an attorney, Hecht Walker P.C., in Jonesboro, Georgia. During Greg’s tenure as a legislator, he worked with GAE on legislation that made teacher battery a felony and designated felony records of juveniles to be transferred from school to school with notification to the classroom teacher. Child safety and prosecuting public corruption are two issues of utmost importance to Greg. He believes when a child has a safe, nurturing environ-ment, it creates a better classroom experience and prosecuting public corruption without regard to politics will ensure the state’s financial resources are not lost to fraud and abuse. As attorney general, Greg’s top three priorities will be protecting vulnerable Georgians from abuse and fraud, improving child safety, and prosecuting public corruption without regard to politics.
