ATTENDANCE/ABSENCES/TARDIES K-12 California Education Code EC48260.5: states that it is the parent(s)/guardian(s) responsibility to comply with the school attendance of any student between the ages of 5 through 18. State law states that absences are excused only if the child is ill or there is a death in the immediate family (3 day limit), all other absences are unexcused. Any tardy over 30 minutes, except for medical reasons is considered unexcused. If your child has 3 unexcused absences and/or tardies, he or she will be considered truant. After 4 or more unexcused absences or tardies you may receive a citation for truancy. Going out of town with your children during regular school days, claiming family emergencies, is an unexcused absence. We will require a doctor’s note for 3 or more consecutive days of absence. 6 Excessive absence: When a student is absent 10 days or more during one school year, with or without a valid excuse from the parent. When excessive absences and/or tardies are documented, parents are notified by mail with a detailed explanation of the consequences for continued absences/tardies. The next step will be a referral to the School Attendance Review Board. All medical, vision and dental appointments should be scheduled after school, and therefore are not valid excuses for absence, morning tardies, or early dismissal, unless deemed a medical emergency. If our school staff is unable to reach you by phone after your child has been absent for 5 consecutive days to verify your child’s absence, your child will automatically be dropped from our school attendance. You will then be required to re-enroll your child in our school. If at that time, if there is available space in your child’s grade, will you be able to re-enroll your child in our school. A new and complete emergency card MUST be submitted. Parents are required to notify the front office immediately with a change of address or phone numbers whenever they occur. Excessive tardiness: When a student is late for school more than 30 minutes 3 times per School year, or dismissed from school more than 30 minutes per school year. According to School policy, (GCS 2010-11- 02-07), each morning when students are not in their classroom seats when the final bell rings at 8:00 a.m. K-6 campus and 7:55 a.m. 7- 12 campus will receive a “Tardy Referral” from the front office and miss their recess for that day and write standards at K-6 and receive disciplinary action at 7-12. Students that do not come to school on time miss valuable instruction and disrupt the learning process for others. Please be on time to school! SATURDAY SCHOOL POLICY GCS policy #2013-14-11-01; states that any student in 7th – 12th grade who is absent or tardy 3 times without an excuse during a calendar month will be required to attend lunch detention. Any additional absences and/or tardies during the same month will result in mandatory Saturday School to make up for the lost time. During Saturday School, the students will be required to clean the campus, make up homework and write essays about how to improve their attendance. Failure to attend Saturday School will result in student suspension in accordance with our suspension policy the next school business day.
