35 ONLINE COURSES 9-12 Guidance Charter School has contracted with APEX learning to provide additional courses for the 9-12 grades beyond the school day. Students can participate during or after school or both. There are many of UC approved courses including honors and Advanced Placement. ACCELERATED READER/MATH K-12 The Guidance Charter School is offering the Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math programs to all students in K-12. Each student will be assigned titles of books according to his/her reading levels. Students earn points for reading books and passing comprehension tests. G.A.T.E. PROGRAM K-12 The Guidance Charter School’s philosophy is that the gifted and talented program will provide an “equality of opportunity” so that the students can achieve their potential. The program is an integral part of the regular school program, providing differentiated learning experiences. The Guidance Charter School will follow the Palmdale School District plan for identification. Teachers, parents, students, administrators and any community member may provide referrals. Referral forms are available in Spanish and English. All children are eligible for referral. GRADUATION and PROMOTIONAL CERMONY K, 6TH, 8TH AND 12TH GRADE Students in Kindergarten, Sixth, Eighth, and Twelve grades will participate in the promotion/graduation ceremony complete with cap and gown if they meet the promotional and graduation school requirements. RETENTION/PROMOTION POLICY K-12 May 7, 2008, the governing board of The Guidance Charter School adopted the following retention policy: A pupil shall be promoted or retained only as provided in the policy adopted. Policy to read: “Based on teacher assessment and determination, and approval by Executive Director or designee; any pupil who has not mastered grade level proficiency in Reading, Language Arts, and Mathematics, based on California Curriculum Standards, said pupil shall be retained in his/her current grade for the following school year.” If an appeal is made by parent/guardian, the burden shall be on the appealing party to show why the decision of the school should be overruled. Kindergarten students will pass a comprehensive assessment at the end of their Kindergarten year with a 75% mastery, and students in grades 1st – 12th must have a Cumulative GPA of 2.00. For qualification to be promoted to the next grade. PARENT AND TEACHER ADVISORY COUNCIL K-12 Each campus will establish their own parent and teacher advisory council (PTAC). The purpose of a parent and teacher advisory council is to meet once a month to discuss how to invite and keep parents involved with The Guidance Charter School. Areas of need are classroom assistance, cafeteria and playground monitoring, fundraisers and other school related activities. The council will designate a parent spokesperson to advise the Executive Director or designee and address the school board. The Parent Advisory Committee will not have any voting authority. Council will consist of seven members of the following individuals:  2 Teachers  1 Classified employees  3 Parents  1 Administrator
