Now is your chance to vote for them! The CONCRETE Times has launched a new series of awards that will shine the spotlight on the people that make concrete. There are lots of awards handed out in the industry every year. Best Project, Best Design, Most Innovative New Product, Best Product in Show, are just a few of those available and if any are awarded to people, they will invariably feature architects, project engineers or senior management in some capacity. Everyone who has worked at the sharp end of the industry will have their fund of stories about complaining drivers, pump operators trying to fill the finisher’s boots and the people that buy concrete are among the fastest to complain if even the slightest thing goes awry - I know, I was one of them for a number of years! I read the other day about over £20k of deliveries being rejected purely as a consequence of traffic delays and this supply was not made from a depot but a mobile batching plant, which highlights how difficult the drivers job is, how on earth they manage in cities like London these das, I just don’t know. But they, like all the other people behind the scenes, never get any recognition beyond their salaries for their efforts and, to me, this just does not seem equitable. To be designed, batched and mixed, a cube of concrete first has to be sold and, in the UK, sales as a profession, thus salesmen a group, have never really been valued in the way that they are in, for example, the USA, so I see it as fair and right that we also celebrate the achievements of the men and women who put in so many miles over the years and, as a friend reminds me, now listen to so many H&S briefings when going on site! Batchers, Despatchers, Cubies, Lab staff are all essential members of the concrete production team and without pump operators, formwork erectors and finishers, all the concrete produced would have nowehere to go. So, please visit the CONCRETE Heroes web page - www. theconcretetimes.info/concreteheroes. html and make your nomination, telling us as much about the person as possible and feel free to include any amusing anecdotes that involve them as well as telling us what it is that makes them a real, live, authentic, CONCRETE Hero!
