The CONCRETE Times • November 15 TRUCK MIXER FEATURE Premier Service - Volumetric Mixer Insurance - Is Your Vehicle Fully Insured? The Concrete Times talks to Steve Booth from Brokers Premier Insurance. 12 TCT: Steve, thanks for taking time out to talk to The Concrete Times. We thought it useful to explain to readers about Volumetric Mixer vehicle cover in some detail as you specialise in offering cover for these trucks. SB: Thanks for the opportunity. Over twenty years ago I was introduced to a volumetric operator who was having difficulty obtaining insurance for his vehicles, so it was a perfect opportunity for me to learn about the subject .I did so in some detail, talking to manufacturers, even going out on jobs on construction sites to try to fully understand what it was all about. Subsequently, I designed a specific insurance cover to cater specifically for Volumetric Mixers. TCT: On the subject of Volumetric Mixer Vehicle cover, why is it so important that operators should forget the traditional method of insuring these trucks on a commercial vehicle policy and, instead, insure them as mobile plant? SB: There is, of course, room for both – commercial vehicle and specialist mobile plant policies – but there is such a lack of understanding in the insurance industry about these vehicles and how they operate. Firstly, the commercial vehicle route tends to be more expensive, because it is rated on the gross vehicle weight rather than the value of the plant. Secondly, when insuring the vehicle as mobile plant, full theft cover would apply but, buried deep in commercial vehicle policy conditions, there would very likely be an exclusion to theft while the keys were in the ignition – of course a requirement to run the mixer. TCT: So where does the bulk of your business come from? SB: The vast majority of our business comes from the smaller independent operators, those companies operating from one to three vehicles – although we do also cover organisations running up to say ten units, so we can cater for most users. TCT: Premier Insurance has been promoting in The Concrete Times for over 18 months now – this apart, what sets you apart from other brokers? SB: Well ,after so many years specialising, I suspect you can now say we are passionate about the subject, so it follows we understand what most operators are looking for. I would say service is key – our knowledge probably gives us an advantage, especially when dealing with insurance companies underwriting the policy – they are confident that we know what we are doing, so, in return, we can negotiate some of the keenest prices. TCT: What about other vehicles or different types of plant? SB: We are often asked about other plant and vehicles, concrete pumps for example but also liability insurance, itself a complex subject, fleet and plant insurance, property cover and so on - whilst Volumetric Mixers are very much our speciality, we can probably help in most commercial insurance. TCT: So specifically what about product liability insurance? SB: That’s a good point. Most people are familiar with Public Liability and Employers Liability but I would say that Product Liability is one area of insurance most often overlooked. For example, if an operator with a Volumetric Mixer is supplying concrete to a customer and that customer suffers a reaction or a burn, it would be a product that would have caused the injury – so it is vital that a Product Liability policy is already in place. TCT: Thanks for your time, Steve.
