Record attendance numbers split evenly between the 2 days and a visit from The World of Concrete management team. It was at The World of Concrete show in 1993 in New Orleans, USA, that I first had thoughts of running a concrete show in the UK, so it was a particular pleasure to welcome WOC Vice-President Tom Cindric and Director, Jackie James, to our 5th birthday edition of The UK CONCRETE Show at the NEC at the end of last month. They were highly complimentary about the show and whilst we small in comparison to their Las Vegas event, give us time - they had almost 40 years head start! Next year’s show remains at the NEC and we are expecting a splash of Vegas glamour with the opening of Resorts World - http:// www.resortsworldbirmingham. co.uk due to have taken place in spring 2015 - it should be well bedded in by the time we arrive. Many of you will have seen the ongoing construction work of the 48,000 m2 complex - indeed, a good number of you will be supplying the project - and we have great ‘post-show evening entertainment’ hopes for this £150 million pound leisure and entertainment complex. Among the promised attractions are 178 four star bedrooms with 5 five star suites and an Asian- themed spa, a wide range of internationally themed restaurants and bars, an 11-screen cinema, an outlet shopping centre with 50 units selling a range of discounted fashion, shoes and electronics and, to complete that Las Vegas analogy, yes, a casino, that promises a “contemporary and exciting gaming experience”. One of the enjoyable aspects of the show’s first couple of years at the Ricoh Arena, appreciated by many of you, was being able to leave the onsite hotel room, walk down to breakfast, then straight into the show hall. Having restaurants, bars and casino onsite means make this has a valuable development for many attendees and, in our view, completes the package offered by the NEC - it’s communication links including international airport, mainline rail station accessible on foot from the UKCS hall and sitting on 2 motorways, mean that there is no better exhibition venue in the World, making it it a fitting home for Europe’s Number 1 specialist concrete event!
