Two steel armour strips are attached back-to-back to one another with frangible fasteners that fail under tension as the adjacent slab panels cure and contract way from one another. Attached to one of the steel strips, by welding, is a thin gauge steel plate which retains the concrete during the casting process. Attached through the thin gauge steel plate at regular intervals are load transfer dowels. These are positioned to be approximately at half depth of the concrete slab, at the neutral axis. ARMOURJOINT is unique that it is the first joint system designed with an asymmetrical dowel. As the joint opens towards it’s maximum the embedment of the dowel in each slab panel becomes equal, wheras other dowel systems on the market are designed such that they are positioned midway across the joint when the joint is closed. The moment the joint begins to open the embedment in one slab panel reduces further and further. All joints in formwork systems should be filled with a suitable filler material once the joint has opened. The filler, the company claims, significantly reduces the severity of impact from traffic across the joint.
