Figure 1.4 The population’s highest completed education, calculated for men and women, 15-69 years Number Men Women Note: More women than men complete upper secondary school and higher education. Nearly half of the women between 30-34 years have higher education while only about 30% of the men do. Source: www.dst.dk For example, if we look at the two genders in terms of education, today’s reality is completely different from what it was 50 years ago. Today a larger proportion of women have higher education, and in upper secondary school, the female students get higher grades than the male students. The significantly higher level of education SOCIAL STUDIES AND GENDER EQUALITY 17 among young women may suggest that changes in the labour market will occur within a short period of years – particularly in terms of income and pensions paid to women. But what is the equality situation between women and men in terms of income and pension? Equality in an economic perspective – resource distribution The science of economics describes how resources are used and distributed. Economics involves thoughts on how to obtain resources, how resources meet people’s needs, and how resources are distributed in society. Society does not have unlimited resources. Resources are scarce. Therefore, the economy constantly requires us to prioritise our resources. But since resources are scarce, it is reasonable that they should be distributed fairly, for example that incomes and pensions should be distributed fairly. Otherwise some people have a lot, while others have very little. Looking at gender equality in an economic perspective, it is interesting to study incomes and pensions because those two economic measures may reveal whether women and men have equal opportunities in terms of consumption of goods and services and participation in society. Looking at Table 1.4 and Figure 1.5, we see that the trend unilaterally points to differences in both income and 55,000 50,000 45,000 40,000 35,000 30,000 25,000 20,000 15,000 10,000 5,000 0 Vocational training Upper secondary school Primary school Short higher education Medium higher education Bachelor level Master level PhD
