In December of 2010, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal announced the first habitat project funded by the Shell/ CCA partnership – the restoration of Independence Island in Barataria Bay – at a press conference in Baton Rouge. “Our marsh is the heart and soul of Louisiana. We have a sporting heritage second to none and a long, proud connection to our land, water and resources. Louisiana sportsmen know better than anyone the need to give something back to the environment so that we can continue to enjoy it while preserving this heritage for our children and grandchildren. That’s what makes this announcement today so inspiring – CCA’s Building Conservation Program is a long-term commitment from the angling community to the incredible natural resources of Louisiana. Partnerships like this are a critical component for helping our citizens get back on their feet after the oil spill and preserving the beauty of coastal Louisiana for generations to come.” said Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal at the time. In 2013, the Building Conservation Trust (BCT) was officially created as a 501c3 non-profit supporting organization of CCA dedicated exclusively to the business of funding marine habitat creation and restoration in areas that can be accessed and enjoyed by recreational anglers. BCT has created a model for the successful collaboration of business, non-profit organizations and government agencies to revitalize critical habitat and establish a vibrant foundation for the marine ecosystem.
