As the map of the world’s population continues to evolve, we question identity, scrutinise belonging, compromise culture and defend our homes. Contains scenes which some viewers may fi nd distressing. Total running time 96min MERYEM AAMIR Clouzot’s sharp dissection of a young woman’s trial for murder gave Bardot her finest role; she responded superbly. The attorneys offer different takes on what led the impulsive Dominique to kill. But flashbacks depicting her flight from oppressive parents to a wayward life on Paris’ Left Bank reveal a more complex reality, including her passionate but ill-matched relationship with Gilbert (Sami Frey), a young conductor and her sister’s ex-boyfriend. Clouzot’s cool, measured direction implies that nobody in this moral quagmire – least of all the judiciary – should be let off the hook... though all have their reasons, however self-centred. Acerbic and unsentimental, this bleak, blistering exploration of love’s darker side improves with age. Geoff Andrew + PAPARAZZI Dir Jacques Rozier.
