This excitingly radical, avant-garde, fast-moving and at times surreal drama finds director Med Hondo boldly displaying influences that range from Eisenstein to Godard. Shot on a low budget over four years, Oh, Sun! tells the story of a man from a French colony in West Africa who, encouraged by propaganda, is chosen to emigrate to Paris where he optimistically hopes to make a ‘better’ life for himself. Although an educated man, he has extreme difficulty finding work (employers refuse to hire him before he’s given an interview). He can’t get an apartment because landlords worry he’ll cause trouble. And he’s on the receiving end of condescending sexual advances from women. He faces discrimination from all angles. Prize-winning Med Hondo is a giant of African cinema and Oh, Sun! is a vibrant humanist statement on racism and immigration that remains pertinent today. Set within the deep, seemingly limitless desert landscapes of rural Rajasthan, this beautiful, poetic tale exists somewhere between past and present. Here, villagers rely on age-old customs and cures. Nooran (Golshifteh Farahani, About Elly) is a defiantly independent young tribal woman trained by her grandmother in the ancient healing remedy of singing to counteract the deadly poison of scorpion stings. A lone middle-aged camel herder Aadam (Irrfan Khan, The Lunchbox) is Nooran’s admirer. Though spurned by her, he hatches a plot to win her heart. Glorious photography by Pietro Zuecher is matched by Anup Singh’s meditative direction and the restrained performances of his leads, as well as a gorgeous cameo from legendary Hindi actor Waheeda Rehman. Cary Rajinder Sawhney Filmed over five years, this unflinching documentary examines violence committed by groups opposed to the peace process in Northern Ireland, long after the Troubles came to an end. The title is no exaggeration. This tenacious investigation focuses on a Derry mother subjecting her own drugaddicted teenage son to the punishment of dissident Republican paramilitaries, who respond to so-called antisocial behaviour with kneecap shootings and banishment. Award-winning journalist Sinéad O’Shea gains access to a former IRA member-turned-community mediator to learn about everyday realities behind the headlines, asking: ‘What does it take for a war to really end?’. The result is a finely balanced example of documentary filmmaking, featuring extraordinary moments such as a choreographed street display by masked gunmen. A compelling film, it gains resonance given the uncertain future of Northern Ireland’s power-sharing agreement – you have to keep reminding yourself that this is happening in the UK. Sales Films Distribution Renowned for his searing social commentary, Nabil Ayouch’s bold and lyrical ensemble drama reflects on the violence of not being true to yourself. When educational reform is imposed across Morocco in 1982, a beloved local teacher in a remote Berberspeaking village in the Atlas Mountains cannot bear to teach children in Arabic – a language they don’t understand – and is quickly replaced. This is one of five interconnecting stories through which Ayouch frames present-day Casablanca, Morocco’s bustling economic capital. He weaves together the lives of a Jewish pianoplaying bar owner, an affluent teenager whose single mother is endlessly absent, a young musician who worships Freddie Mercury – much to his father’s disdain – and a bored housewife who is silently controlled by her husband.
