Sales Meikincine Entertainment What would you do if you discovered a beloved family member had been working for a murderous dictator? That’s the basis of this raw and compelling documentary. Lissette Orozco’s world fell apart when she found out her favourite aunt had been arrested. The glamorous Adriana was charged with being a member of DINA, Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet’s brutal secret police. Shell-shocked, Lissette turned the camera on herself, her family and the country’s dark past, embarking on a chilling personal journey to investigate who Adriana really was. The result combines Skype interviews with her aunt, who never admitted her guilt and now lives in exile in Australia, along with archive footage, family pictures and interviews with former friends of Adriana. First-time filmmaker Orozco has crafted a tense and devastating testimony of family betrayal, the narratives of self-denial created in times of repressive rule and the alternative truth we build for ourselves in order to survive. Laure Bonville Bold and defiant, Kaouther Ben Hania’s fiction debut, based on real events, presents a pointed questioning of patriarchal systems, systemic corruption and of the narrative of victimhood. Nine single-take sequences follow Miriam over the course of one night. It begins benignly at a university fundraising event, where she catches the eye of a handsome new face. The second sequence sees the man pursuing her, his intentions unclear. Miriam next appears dishevelled and petrified. She has just been raped by several policemen. And so a bureaucratic nightmare begins, as Miriam and the man attempt to obtain a medical or police statement in order to report the crime. The film offers sharp social commentary on the agency of a rape victim – questioned rather than believed, engaged in a maddening cycle of victimising behaviour. Miriam’s defiance reveals the manipulation of stigma against her and the underlying systemic corruption, but also the power she that has to resist. Prod Co Vidhi Films Pakistani director Sabiha Sumar and Indian actor Kalki Koechlin traverse their countries to examine a radically changing political landscape and the rise of intolerance. Sabiha Sumar returns to the LFF with an incisive and personal search for the future of her country, wondering how she, as a modern woman, fits into that society. She questions the genesis of Pakistan, soon delving into her ancestral roots in India. Accompanying her, Kalki Koechlin engages in a discussion that encompasses modern life. The conversations between the two women and their encounters with political figures and ordinary people gives rise to a personal and poetic search to uncover the voices of the silent majority, particularly those of women. This film reveals new perspectives on how peace can exist between the two neighbours, once divided by Partition. But as Sumar argues, it also shows the countries travelling on a similar path of religious extremism. Cary Rajinder Sawhney DOC DOC
