BFI Southbank Guide Sep-Oct 2017

Across September at BFI Southbank see Stephen King stories told on the big screen (p18). Cinema, more than any other art form, has a way of projecting stories directly into our consciousness. The act of experiencing cinema resembles the process of memory itself, we’re reading and decoding the images and sounds – the pictures in the fire, the frisson of film itself has the ability to evoke a moment in time with such visceral immediacy that its images and stories lock into our memories, and when the stories are truly great, they resonate deeply, becoming literally unforgettable. To create such moments once is a relatively rare achievement, to do so time after time is extraordinary. This month we celebrate the work of a writer who has created iconic stories that have captured our imaginations and inhabited our collective consciousness – and perhaps more powerfully our sub-conscious – so often as to qualify him as one of the greatest storytellers of all time.
