A Ton of Jazz

BFI Southbank Guide Sep-Oct 2017

‘I DON’T CARE MUCH ABOUT MUSIC. WHAT I LIKE IS SOUNDS’ DIZZY GILLESPIE Join us in a celebration of five music legends, invites season programmer Dick Fiddy This year saw the centenary of five jazz greats, all of whom made memorable appearances on British television. In this special celebratory season we’ve combed the TV archives to unearth great performances by, interviews with and commentaries about this unique quintet: ‘First Lady of Song’ Ella Fitzgerald; Bebop champion and trumpeter extraordinaire ‘Dizzy’ Gillespie; influential improviser Thelonious Monk; jazz singer, dancer, actress and activist Lena Horne; and ‘the drummer’s drummer,’ Buddy Rich. Our screenings tap sources like the BBC2’s famous series Jazz 625, special guest appearances on variety shows, dedicated concerts and revealing interviews conducted by the likes of Michael Parkinson. Although each of these music makers have left their mark on the world of jazz, their prestigious and versatile talent has ensured their names also resonate far beyond the genre. WANT MORE?
