Dir Meghna Gulzar. With Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sensharma, Neeraj Kabi, Tabu. 132min. Digital. Hindi with EST. 15 Part police procedural and part crime drama, Talvar is based on a real-life double homicide that took place in 2008. Fourteen-year-old Shruti and Khempal, the family’s male help, are found murdered at home. Shruti’s parents are the prime suspects. Although the director presents opposing viewpoints, her sympathies clearly lie with the parents, detailing their fate as the result of a botched investigation and professional rivalry between the investigators. Sairat India 2016. Dir Nagraj Manjule. With Rinku Rajguru, Akash Thosar, Arbaz Shaikh. 174min. Digital. Marathi with EST. For all its apparent modernity, many forms of love in India – from gay to straight – can be a punishable crime. Sairat is a compelling revenge drama whose themes play out as social commentary. Dealing with an inter-caste teen romance that has gone awry, it’s deliberately pitched as a mainstream feature, with four songs and dances, yet the gutwrenching climax is one that you won’t soon forget. Jigarthanda India 2014. Dir Karthik Subbaraj. With Siddharth, Bobby Simha, Lakshmi Menon, Nassar. 171min. Digital. Tamil with EST .15 Subbaraj, a new generation Tamil director, delivers this effortlessly cool gangster flick in which he both pays tribute to and affectionately parodies Quentin Tarantino. A filmmaker infiltrates a gangster’s den as research for his next blood- splattered production. Trapped there, he’s forced to become a gangster himself in order to make his film. A knowing take on the thriller genre, this gangster musical has gore aplenty, all set to a stylish score. NH10 India 2015. Dir Navdeep Singh. With Anushka Sharma, Neil Bhoopalam, Darshan Kumar, Deepti Naval. 115min. Digital. Hindi with EST. 15 In this edge-of-your-seat feminist thriller, co-produced by Anushka Sharma, cool couple Meera and Arjun are travelling through the badlands of Haryana for a weekend away when they come face-to-face with a gang of violent thugs. The gang turns on them, injuring Arjun, and it’s left to Meera to become a killer in order to save them both from certain death.
