BFI DIGITAL COLLECTION PROJECTING THE ARCHIVE Rediscovered British features THU 11 MAY 18:20 NFT1 59 The Hellions + intro by Vic Pratt, BFI UK 1961. Dir Ken Annakin. With Richard Todd, Lionel Jeffries, Anne Aubrey, Marty Wilde. 86min. 35mm. 15 Marvellous matinee thrills as a gang of ruthless outlaws terrorise a township in this strange and savage British western shot in South Africa. Standing tall, High Noon-style, is Hargis (a harassed Todd), sole representative of the law facing up to the murderous gang of marauders led by leering Luke (a superbly sinister Jeffries). This outstandingly odd and often violent oater – strikingly shot in colour – also boasts an animated Anne Aubrey, James Booth at his nastiest and British rocker Marty Wilde scowling moodily from beneath a Stetson. Deftly directed by old hand Ken Annakin, this weird western was written off by many critics, and is well overdue for a second look.
