Involving crews to drive value Milford Haven tug crews help achieve fuel savings in excess of 6% In England, SVITZER crews have been invited to get involved in business decisions and come up with initiatives in order to improve business, and the results have been great. Having been given the oppor- tunity to do their jobs even better, the crews have taken great pride in identifying lots of cost-cutting initiatives. So far, the tug crews of Milford Haven take the prize. HALF TONE ROUND TRIP The tugs servicing Milford Haven are berthed at Carr Jetty in Pembroke dock. This is far from an ideal position, as it lies about 10 miles east of the port entrance where tugs usually make fast to incoming ships. Escort tugs add another five miles to reach the pilot station. This makes for quite a round trip: Steaming the length of the Haven and back easily uses up to half a tonne of fuel. So when the tug crews were asked to come up with suggestions for savings, they were quick to point out that avoiding steaming backwards and forwards after every tug job would yield significant financial results and reduce our environmental foot print. SIMPLE SOLUTIONS, GREAT RESULT S Aside from the berths, the tugs can also swing on mooring buoys at three points out in the Haven. Part of the solution suggested by the crews has been to move one of the buoys to a more convenient position, and getting the tugs to moor two up on buoys. This does away with the need for steaming back and forth after every job, and it has the added benefit of letting the tugs share anchor watch, reducing the effect on working hours. In addition, planning berthing so that tugs don’t have to move to let work-bound tugs out and connecting berthed tugs to shore power recently installed at Carr Jetty also contributes. COMENDABLE EFORT All in all, it is estimated that the tug crews of Milford Haven have helped achieve fuel savings in excess of 6% this year, and work continues to improve on that number. Two of the Milford Haven tugs have been fitted with the Engine-I fuel monitoring system, and the resulting fuel consumption data will help crews identify further improvements, hopefully creating a virtuous circle. Congratulations go out to all involved for their cooperation, and special commendations are due to the Duty Masters who have accepted the extra task of always ensuring that tugs stand down to the berth offering the best fuel efficiency.
