Job title: Partner, Hong Kong
2016: Partner, Hong Kong, Appleby
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
In the past year, the predominant trend among Chinese
insurers is the use of offshore vehicles. In particular, there had
been a number of mergers and acquisitions of international
and local insurance companies involving insurance companies
registered in Bermuda. It has been an exciting journey and I
was given the chance to engage in some of the biggest deals,
for instance the derivatives platform centralisation of an
insurance conglomerate. Our firm provided legal advice on
all legal and regulatory issues from an offshore perspective.
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
The biggest challenge would be the increasing competition
in the offshore space as players in the market are becoming
more sophisticated and demanding. With a more globalised
clientele who are looking to expand their business to multiple
overseas markets, with a much wider regional coverage, legal
practitioners are expected to keep up to date on market trends,
regulatory developments and changes in needs of clients.
These demand a great deal of expertise and resources, and we
are proud that Appleby remains at the forefront in providing
offshore insurance advice.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what
would it have been?
I dreamed of becoming a teacher growing up, as I enjoy
mentoring and taking care of others. It gives me a sense of

Chan has extensive experience in the offshore space through
working at two other offshore law firms in Hong Kong
prior to joining Appleby. She has also worked in the London
and Hong Kong offices of Clifford Chance for 10 years
before entering the offshore field. Her experience spans
the spectrum of banking and finance transactions including
bilateral and syndicated lending, project and acquisition
finance, asset-backed and property financing, energy and
infrastructure financing, pre-IPO debt and equity finance,
corporate restructuring/pre-insolvency and various forms of
credits and securities. She also leads the firm’s insurances and
private client & trust practices in Asia.
Chan has been widely recognised by her clients as well as
legal directories. She was selected as one of the region’s 10
most notable offshore lawyers of the Asian Legal Business
Offshore Client Choice List 2017. The Magic Circle-trained
lawyer is also lauded as “responsive” by Legal 500.
Why did you choose to work in this industry?
Having had more than 15 years of experience in the legal field,
I have worked with major financial institutions. Appleby is
the leading international law firm in Bermuda with a strong
practice in insurance as well as private client and trust, and
I have advised many insurance companies, private banks and
high net worth individuals on a broad range of financial and
