Influential women in re/insurance: re/insurers and brokers
OF OF 2017
Job title: Reinsurance manager
2005: Reinsurance manager, ArgoGlobal
2001: Syndicate reinsurance manager, Markel International
1999: Claims Broker technician, Miller Insurance Services
1995: Claims broker, JLT Group
Since its entry to the London Market in 2008, ArgoGlobal
has concentrated on developing and broadening its portfolio
and our comprehensive offering is one of the factors that sets
us apart in the market. Working for an insurer with such a
diverse portfolio means I work across a myriad of classes of
business while gaining exposure to niche and emerging risks.
Constantly learning new things, facing new challenges and
meeting new and talented people has been the highlight of
my career to date.
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
Trying to progress a career with a young family is a challenge
for many female professionals. I am fortunate to work for a
supportive employer that offers flexible working hours and
understands the importance of family commitments and a
work-life balance. Diversity has emerged as a key theme for
our market in recent years. While there is still a long road
ahead, I believe we have made significant progress.
We have seen an increase in the number of women entering
the market over the past five years, and I’m very proud to work
for an insurer where women hold a significant number of
senior management roles. However, as the market’s workforce
evolves to become more diverse, its working environment
needs to evolve as well. For many professionals, flexible
working hours has a key role in successfully balancing a
career and a family. In supporting them, we can attract a more
diverse workforce and retain key talent within the industry.
Louise Miller has almost 25 years of experience in the
insurance industry. She began her career in the Lloyd’s
market as a claims broker at JLT Group before joining Miller
Insurance Services as a claims broker technician. She made
the transition to the underwriting sector as a claims adjuster
for Markel International. Upon requesting a transfer to
reinsurance, Miller was entrusted with reinsurance for the
aviation division and was eventually promoted to a syndicate
reinsurance manager role. Since ArgoGlobal’s foundation in
2008 she has managed all outwards reinsurance for a diverse
portfolio that currently includes 22 classes of business spanning
marine, energy, specialty, property, and liability.
Why did you choose to work in this industry?
My father was a broker at JLT Group, and I was lucky enough
to be offered a job at their office in Chelmsford during the
school holidays helping with claims processing, and then
claims broking in their London office for a short period.
I had planned to go on to university to train as a primary
school teacher after completing my A-levels, but when JLT
Group offered me a permanent position as a claims broker. I
decided to take the role and I’ve never looked back.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Insurance is such a varied industry and, as a reinsurance
buyer, I have had the opportunity to work with people from
across our market. It is one of the aspects of the job that I
enjoy most. Managing outwards reinsurance for ArgoGlobal
requires me to work closely with both internal and external
parties. I spend a lot of time with our underwriters, actuaries
and claims adjusters to ensure I have a comprehensive
understanding of the needs of each class of business, but
forming and maintaining partnerships with brokers and
reinsurers is an integral part of the role.
