It helped me a lot to see that Swiss Re’s senior management
had confidence that I could master the challenge.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what
would it have been?
I would have loved to work in the film industry—behind the
scene. I would have chosen to be a scriptwriter but I guess the
best fit would be as a movie producer: to bring people and
ideas together, make a creative project come to life.
Why did you choose to work in this industry?
I have always been interested in financial services. Initially at
least, banks attracted me more than insurance companies—so
that is where my career started. I later worked as a consultant
for a few years. When I decided to leave consulting, I
interviewed with a number of companies. However, what
convinced me to go for reinsurance were two aspects: the
team I met during my interview process and the chance to
work in an industry that increases the resilience of society
and the world.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
By nature, I am a curious person and I love change as it
keeps things interesting in my daily job life. Looking
back, my greatest achievements are linked to situations of
change—such as when, as chief financial officer (CFO),
reinsurance EMEA at Swiss Re, I led the team through a
major reorganisation and a cultural transformation at the
same time. In less than three years, the finance organisation
shifted its focus from accounting to becoming a much better
partner to the business.
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
Following the transformation I led as CFO of EMEA, I
was asked to move from finance and took over the market
responsibility for southern EMEA. It goes without saying
that the step from ‘back office’ to the front has not been
a walk in the park but now, one year on, I consider it a
