If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what
would it have been?
I started quite young so I’m not sure where I might have
developed. However, during my gardening leave, I spent time
volunteering to help women get back into the workplace. I
found it incredibly rewarding and interesting, so if I had a
second career I’d be interested in doing more work in that area.
Why did you choose to work in this industry?
The city always fascinated me and, as my father was a banker, I
knew I wanted to do something in a different financial sector.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Being part of the management team of a new Lloyd’s syndicate,
Probitas 1492, is incredibly exciting, and certainly a career
highlight. Recognising the tough market conditions means we
don’t want to be a ‘me-too’ insurer and we have been working
over the past 18 months to showcase our differences to clients
and stakeholders. It is a fantastic opportunity for me to bring
more business into the Lloyd’s market.
I’m well aware that putting together a team of enthusiastic and
driven individuals from scratch is not an opportunity given
to many people. We’ve been able to build a team of people
with the right attitude, all of whom are here to go the extra
mile because they want to, not because they have to. It’s a
privilege to be shaping the Probitas culture and refreshing to
see everyone working to the same goals.
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
Probitas is a career highlight, but it’s also been the biggest
challenge I’ve encountered. Going from a large corporate
environment to a start-up is very different and can take
some adjustment. It takes a leap of faith in yourself and your
colleagues, as well as a lot of hard work. Having said that, it is
certainly more exciting. While it’s been challenging at times,
it’s so rewarding to look at what’s been achieved and what’s
