responsible for making the right decision for everyone, and
finding the right fit for us as a business was essential.
I am very proud that we were able to find a successful match
for the entrepreneurial and innovative culture we fostered at
ANV, and that we have found a like-minded approach on a
significantly larger scale within the AmTrust Group.
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
Attracting new talent from diverse pools to the re/insurance
industry is a huge challenge that faces the whole market.
For insurance companies to remain relevant and to safeguard
our futures we must respond to the changing faces of global
industry and the individual consumers we are serving.
Attracting and retaining a workforce and leadership who
reflect the diversity of our client base, who can innovate, and
can develop relationships through like-mindedness and mutual
understanding, is a challenge for our industry. It is essential that
we rise to that challenge to remain competitive and relevant.
Has the profile of women in re/insurance been raised in
There have undoubtedly been steps forward in raising the
profile of women in re/insurance, as evidenced by this list,
which is a great inspiration. With female leaders of Lloyd’s
and the CII we have exceptional female role models, and we
must make the most of promoting their success to encourage
other women to consider the insurance industry for a career.
Our challenge is to promote the myriad of different
opportunities available in our market, and to build the kind of
inclusive environment that talented women want to work in.
In 2016 Lynsey Cross joined the executive team of AmTrust,
a multinational property and casualty insurance company,
whose parent company, AmTrust Financial Services (AFSI),
is a NASDAQ listed Fortune 500 company with a market
capitalisation of $4.6 billion. As COO for the international
arm of the company, she is responsible for targeting excellence
from an M&A, human capital, cultural and operational
perspective in every facet of AmTrust outside the US.
Previously, Cross headed specialty insurer ANV Group as chief
executive officer, leading the firm through a sales process and
successful acquisition by AFSI.
She previously spent six years as chief of staff at Guy
Carpenter. In addition to her decade in insurance, she has
held HR leadership roles in banking and capital management
including Barclays Global Investors and Barclays Capital. She
works with the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), London-based
employee resource groups and CII Chartered firms to
promote diversity within their organisations.
She has extensive experience implementing and promoting
diverse and inclusive recruitment and talent management
programmes and has championed diversity and inclusive
practices in financial services throughout her career.
Why did you choose to work in this industry?
After 10 years in investment banking I was approached about
a job in reinsurance and I haven’t looked back.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Leading ANV through a sales process and successful
acquisition by AmTrust. As the leader of a company, you are
