“Being able to provide timely, good
quality analysis to the market
under these circumstances was both
challenging and rewarding.”
Company: AM Best
Job title: Senior director, analytics
2015: Senior director, analytics, AM Best
2006: Senior financial analyst, AM Best
2003: Deputy group security officer, JLT
2001: Risk analyst, Arium Risk Architecture
Why did you choose to work in this industry?
My first job at a risk modelling consultancy introduced me
to the insurance industry and I found that it offered me
good opportunities to put my analytical skills and training
into practice. This is still what I most enjoy about my
job, investigating and working through the wide range of
interesting issues that insurers present.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Making senior director at AM Best was a good moment. It
has offered me the opportunity to work with and develop a
strong team of analysts that provide a valuable contribution
to insurance markets worldwide.
What has been the biggest challenge you have encountered?
In the aftermath of large industry losses, affecting multiple
rated companies, working under significant pressure to assess
the impact on the financial strength of individual insurers
and the wider industry. Being able to provide timely, good
quality analysis to the market under these circumstances was
both challenging and rewarding.
If you had chosen a different profession/career path, what
would it have been?
I studied microbiology at university before moving into the
insurance world, so it is not too difficult to have seen myself
continue as a scientist.
