Bermuda Rising Stars

39 December 2015 Bermuda:Re/insurance+ILS BERMUDA’S RISING STARS evolve before your eyes. It is even more exciting to see and be a part of finding solutions for risk transfer in these types of areas. Do you think the reinsurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? Absolutely. There are various facets of the insurance industry that offer a multitude of opportunities, including but certainly not limited to underwriting, actuarial, marketing, finance and of course my chosen field, legal. All of these can lead to a wide range of opportunities for young professionals and are crucial parts of the industry. The world’s risks are constantly changing, as do reinsurers’ appetites for the risks they undertake. As risks develop, there is opportunity for fresh talent to take on these new risk challenges and find opportunities to cultivate highly sought-after skillsets. The opportunities will only be as wide and as plentiful as the perspective of the individual seeking them. It also helps if you work with a great company and people that support your vision for yourself. What are your aspirations for the future? My current role allows me to work with people from various aspects of the industry, enabling me to have a broad view of the insurance business at XL Catlin. What I enjoy the most is learning how the various parts of the business operate collectively to accomplish one goal. In the future, I imagine myself in a more strategic role charting the direction of a reinsurance operation. If you’d chosen a different profession/career path, what would it have been? I would not rather be on any other path than the one that I am on currently. However, if I absolutely had to choose another career path, I would most likely work in the non-profit third sector, creating initiatives that provide easier access to education for children. I believe that it is important to give back to your community and to encourage others to do the same. I am passionate about community service and have always found it extremely rewarding working with children, encouraging them to be the best that they can be. Jevon Williams Job title: Associate legal counsel, regional compliance officer Company: XL Insurance (Bermuda), XL Catlin Career path Jevon Williams has been associate legal counsel, regional compliance officer, XL Insurance (Bermuda), XL Catlin since 2011. Why did you choose to go into the reinsurance industry? I have always known that when I completed law school, I wanted to be a part of an in-house legal team. I thought that I would somehow land in banking or investments, but never contemplated insurance. Reinsurance of course is Bermuda’s business mainstay. When it came time to look for employment opportunities in Bermuda, reinsurance was a natural option. It has worked out to be a great fit because I enjoy the analytical aspect of business. For the reinsurance industry, this essentially means assessing a client’s business to identify the inherent risks and, where possible, assisting them in transferring those risks away from their balance sheet. In my legal role, I feel that I add business value to this process and I am glad to be working in reinsurance now that I have an industry perspective. Do you think the industry is attractive to young professionals? Certainly; there are many burgeoning areas of risks which are not only interesting, they also relate to issues and topics that are particularly relatable for young professionals. A great example is cyber liability. Young professionals will always be the most tech-savvy and having the opportunity to shape how the world deals with the implicit risks around technology is both challenging and exciting. At XL Catlin, we are nurturing a centre of excellence around cyber liability and it is invigorating to watch a risk of mammoth proportion
