37 December 2015 Bermuda:Re/insurance+ILS BERMUDA’S RISING STARS Canada they were shocked that I was so enthusiastic to be returning home to Bermuda to knock on people’s doors selling insurance. Do you think the reinsurance industry offers good opportunities and career development to young professionals? In today’s market nothing is going to be handed to you on a platter, but I think with hard work and determination there are plenty of opportunities within the industry and room for career development. I subscribe to working and studying hard to set myself apart and doing my best to put myself in a position where I am hard to overlook for an opportunity. I think that it is also important that young professionals take time to make their aspirations known. Having an industry mentor or professional who you look up to can be very beneficial as they can be a wealth of information and provide much-needed support. What are your aspirations for the future? Since starting my career I have been focused on making a name for myself, building my personal brand and defining what success means to me. As I progress in my career away from a leadership role within the operations department at Validus towards a role on the underwriting team, I hope that my initial success continues. Additionally, she is very involved with the Bermuda CPCU Society Chapter and has held many roles as a part of the leadership council. Currently, Roberts is president of the chapter. She won the Bermuda Insurance Institute’s ‘Young Industry Leader of the Year’ Award this year. Why did you choose to go into the reinsurance industry? In the summer between my junior and senior year at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, I was looking for work experience in an office environment. I was fortunate enough to land a three-month extended interview (otherwise known as a summer internship) with Validus Re. Having no experience with the industry, I was immediately captivated by the business and professionals that I came into contact with. Do you think the industry is attractive to young professionals? In Bermuda, the reinsurance industry is considered to be ‘the place to be’! I think that the story is quite different in other countries. For example, while describing my first job to friends at university in
